National Affairs
  • Goa Chief minister Manohar Parrikar announced a policy on Wednesday to regulate dumps of rejected iron ore, by charging a certain fee on the amount of land on which these have piled up for over two decades.
  • The Government today said it has approved setting up of 22 additional special CBI courts in different parts of the country.
  • Rebel poet Kazi Nazrul’s 37th death anniversary  observed today.
  • After a decade of searches and mis-steps, Indian intelligence agencies finally nabbed Yasin Bhatkal, one of India's most wanted for several terror attacks and founder of the Indian Mujahideen (IM).
  • A committee of newspaper editors, named Editors’ Committee (EC), has been formed in Manipur in the wake of pressures from different quarters on media houses and newspaper editors.
  • The government is working to expand rail, road and air connectivity to northeastern region and projects for 14 new rail lines, four gauge conversion and two doubling projects have been taken up.
  • The Planning Commission will soon seek the Cabinet's nod for remedial measures to address issues hampering implementation of Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects in a bid to re-start the investment cycle.
International Affairs
  • The North and South Koreas formally signed an agreement today forming a joint committee that will meet next week and is tasked with re-opening and running a joint industrial park shut down in April. 
  • Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay will visit India for  6-day tour. This is his first official visit after becoming Prime Minister of Bhutan. Key bilateral issues like financial assistance for the Himalayan nation will be discussed.
  • Today is the 55th birth anniversary of King of Pop Michael Jackson.

Business and Economy
  • Reliance Industries and its partner BP Plc on Thursday won approval to invest USD 3.18 billion in R-Series gas field in the flagging KG-D6 block.
  • Banking Ombudsman today announced that the Banking customers complaining about failed ATM transactions may be entitled to request for CCTV footage without any hassle, which will facilitate fast resolution of complaints.

Science and Technology
  • Astronomers have discovered an 8.2-billion-year-old solar twin that offers a peek at how our Sun will look like in future.
  • Bharti Airtel today announced that  it has successfully conducted field trial of a technology that provides cost-efficient 3G phone services using a communications satellite as a transmission line.

Deaths
  • Vithura Baby, veteran Malayalam journalist and writer who closely followed political and cultural developments of Kerala for over five decades, passes away.

Sports
  • National Sports Day is celebrated across the country today to commemorate the birth anniversary of the hocky legend who put India on the sporting map of the world, Major Dhyan Chand.
  • India beat Bangladesh their final group game of AsiaCup to set up semi-final clash with Malaysia on Friday.
  • India's top football tournament, I-League will kick off on September 21 with 14 teams in the fray, with a three-month gap provided for the IPL-style football league in January-March next year.
