Quarter Life Crisis .... Guess this is what happens to us sometimes

In midst of all the speculations on results, examinations and politics we can not deny the fact that may of us goes through what they call it "Quarter Life Crisis" and this is the time when the intensity of the same increases. This article has been very well summed up by Brenda Della Casa, Editor in Chief Preston Bailey. You start feeling insecure and wonder where you will be in a year or two, but then get scared because you barely know where you are now.
It is the time when you stop going along with the crowd and start realizing that there are a lot of things about yourself that you didn't know and may or may not like. You start realizing that people are selfish and that, maybe, those friends that you thought you were so close to aren't exactly the greatest people you have ever met and the people you have lost touch with are some of the most important ones. What you do not realize is that they are realizing that too and are not really cold or catty or mean or insincere, but that they are as confused as you.

You look at your current job (if you are working), it is not even close to what you thought you would be doing or maybe you are looking for one and realizing that you are going to have to start at the bottom and are scared. You miss the comforts of college, of groups, of socializing with the same people on a constant basis. But then you realize that maybe they weren't so great after all.

You are beginning to understand yourself and what you want and do not want. Your opinions have gotten stronger. You see what others are doing and find yourself judging a bit more than usual because suddenly you realize that you have certain boundaries in your life and add things to your list of what is acceptable and what is not.

You are insecure and then secure. You laugh and cry with the greatest force of your life. You feel alone and scared and confused. Suddenly change is the enemy and you try and cling on to the past with dear life but soon realize that the past is drifting further and further away and there is nothing to do but stay where you are or move forward.

You get your heart broken and wonder how someone you loved could do such damage to you or you lay in bed and wonder why you can't meet anyone decent enough to get to know better. You love someone but maybe love someone else too and cannot figure out why you are doing this because you are not a bad person.

You go through the same emotions and questions over and over and talk with your friends about the same topics because you cannot seem to make a decision. You worry about loans and money and the future and making a life for yourself and while winning the race would be great, right now you'd just like to be a contender!

What you may not realize is that everyone reading this relates to it. We are in our best of times and our worst of times, trying as hard as we can to figure this whole thing out and always remember that lot of times you will Think you can or Think You Can't, You're always Right.

Correction of Sentences Practice Exercise 4 - Solutions

Friends, here are the solutions to our fourth set of Sentence correction exercise. If you are new to this post, just read our correction of sentences exercise number 4 here  before reading the solutions below. All the Best.
  • Either the chief minister or his cabinet colleagues have submitted his resignation.
  • Either the chief minister or his cabinet colleagues have submitted their resignation.
If two subjects are connected with either or, neither nor, not only but also then the verb will be according to the second subject.
  • He will not help you unless you do not give him money.
  • He will not help you unless you do not give him money.
Unless is nothing but --> is.. not
so , no need to use another not in this sentence.

Example : You will not pass the exam if you will not prepare well.
In the above case, we just use unless in the place of if you will not to make the sentence more readable.
You will not pass the exam unless you prepare well.

So its meaningless to use unless and do not in the same sentence.

  • A good teacher always advices his students to work hard.
  • A good teacher always advises his students to work hard.

Advice is noun.
Advise is verb

We say
  • He gave me advice
  • He advised me.
So in above case we can say, A good teacher always advises his students to work hard.

  • The father and the son love one another.
  •  The father and the son love Each other.
 Important point to note :
If there are only two persons, then you should use Each other.
If there are more than two, then you should use one another.
How to remember this rule ?
Just remember, we say Made for each other  to represent Husband and Wife (they are only two).

  • Those three sisters love each other.
  • Those three sisters love one other.

  • Neither of the three boys came.
  • Either of the three boys came.
Important point to note :
You should say either, neither in the case of two.
Any, None in the case of more than two.
  • None of the two boys came.
  • Neither of the two boys came.
  • He is more wiser than his brother.
  • He is more wise than his brother.
You can say, he is better than his brother
or he is more wise than his brother.
but you shouldn't say more wiser
  • It is the best of the two books.
  • It is the better of the two books.
  •  When there are two, you use better.
  • When there are more than two then you use best.
  • He is the better of the three boys.
  • He is the best of the three boys

Solutions with Explanations to Sentence Correction Practice Exercise 3

Friends, these are the solutions to our previous post on "Correction of Sentences Practice Set 2". Read that post before reading these solutions.
  • One of My friends are engineer.
  •  One of My friends are engineer.
Here one of the means one among the group. That means you are just pointing out a specific object / person from the group. So you should not use are for that.
Technically we can say that we should use only Singular Verb for One of the + Plural Noun.
So the correct answer should be One of My friends is engineer.

  • One of my Dogs have disappeared.
Same logic as above. You should say  One of my Dogs has disappeared.
  •  I don't know nothing about him.
  •   I don't know nothing about him.
Here we used TWO NEGATIVES in a sentence. When we use two negatives, it may represent positive. So you shouldn't use that.
What are these negative forms ?
  • Anything / Something --- Nothing
  • Anyone / Someone ---- No one
When you use don't, that is a negative. So simply you can say I don't know anything about him.
Or you can say I know nothing about him.
But you shouldn't say I don't know nothing about him.
  • I could not find him nowhere.
  • He does not want none of the cakes.
Here also same logic, 2 negatives. So, you just should say
  • I could not find him anywhere / I could find him nowhere
  • He does not want any of the cakes / He wants none of the cakes

  • He is working hard with a view to win the match.
  • He is working hard with a view to win the match.
There are only two phrases in English where to is followed by ing form.
Those are
  • look forward to
  • with a view to
you should use ing form to the verb followed by above phrases.
Ex :
  • I look forward to working with you.
  • The statement was discussed at a two-day workshop of all managers with a view to building a comprehensive, detailed document.
So the correct answer is He is working hard with a view to winning the match.

  • I look forward to pass the exam.
Same logic, I look forward to  passing the exam.

  • I, you and he are neighbours.
I is 1st person
You is 2nd person
He / She / It / They etc are third person
If you want to use them together, you should follow an order 2 3 1
That means, first you should use 2nd person, and then 3rd person, later 1st person
So here you should say, You, he and I are neighbours.

  • Let he do whatever he likes to do.
After let you always should use Objects. So you should say, Let him do whatever he likes to do .

  • Let he and I solve this problem.
Let him and me solve the problem.

  • The climate of Nagpur is better than Bombay.
Here our intention is to compare the climate of Nagpur to the climate of Bombay right ?
But check the above sentence again. It just comparing the climate of Nagpur to Bombay!!! (not the climate of Bombay). Hope you got the difference now.
So, we can simply say, the climate of Nagpur is better than the climate of Bombay.
But, here using the climate two times makes the sentence kind of weird. So we simply us that of at the second part of the sentence.
So, the correct answer should be, The climate of Nagpur is better than that of Bombay.
  • The roads of Delhi are better than Allahabad.
Same logic.  We can simply write the roads of Delhi are better than that of Allahabad. Right ?
Wrong !!!
See, here we are talking about the roads. Its plural. So how can we use that of ? ???

So the correct answer will be The roads of Delhi are better than those of Allahabad.

Key with Explanations for the Sentence Correction Problems of English

Friends, here is the key with detailed explanations to our previous post on English Sentence Correction Practice Problems for Bank PO Exams. So we request you to read that post here and try to solve on your own before seeing the solutions below. We hope all of you are ready with your answers. Now lets have a look the the answers with explanations. The underlined part is the error.
1. The things I told you has been done.
Here we are talking about things (plural). So we should use have been instead of has been. The correct sentence is The things I told you about have been done.

2. I do not know why I felt so grief
* Here grief means Deep Sorrow
There are two errors in this sentence,
You shouldn't use the word so.
Here is grief is noun. So you can't feel grief (grammatically incorrect).
So you can say I do not know why I feel so sad (instead of grief)
3. The old lady is poor stricken.
*here stricken means "affected by being poor (poverty)).

here poor is an adjective, stricken is also a noun. We can't put them together. Its grammatically incorrect. So you can use the noun form of poor (poverty) so the sentence will be The old lady is poverty stricken.

4. I will drink milk today morning.
The above sentence is grammatically incorrect. You should say I will drink milk this morning.

Some important points to remember :
Today morning --> This morning
Yesterday morning --> Last morning
Tomorrow morning --> The coming morning.
5. He said he will unable to help me.
You should use the be form after will. So the correct sentence is He said he will be unable to help me.
6. Not only is Javed handsome but also he is very friendly.
The correct structure of the sentence will be Not only is Javed handsome, but he is also very friendly.

7. Thus I have been lived alone for the past two years.
Have been is there. So, there should be an ing form. So the correct sentence is,
Thus I have been living alone for the past two years.

Important Note : I've been observing that people often confuse about the usage of for and since
for is used when you give the time duration.
ex : for the past two years. for the last two weeks etc.
since is used when you give the starting point of the time.
ex : since 1980, since 1st July 2013 etc
8. This chapter comprises of seven sections.
Comprises of is grammatically incorrect. You should say consists of or just comprises. So the correct form(s) of the sentence will be,
This chapter comprises seven sections.
This chapter consists of seven sections.
9. The man was sweating proficiently.
We use the proficiently when somebody is really good at it.
Ex : proficient driver, proficient dancer, proficient in a foreign language etc. Sweating is not a skill :P So we shouldn't use proficiently here.
You can use profusely here if you want to express Extravagant / Abundant.
One more important point to note : Now a days everybody using "sweating" while talking about humans. But grammatically its a blunder. We use sweating only for animals. For humans you should use the word perspire.
Animals ---> Sweats / Sweating
Humanbeings --> Perspire / Perspiring
So you can write, The man is perspiring profusely
10. I also have been sick too.
Here also and too, represent the same meaning. So you shouldn't use them both. Any one of them is enough. So you can say,
I have been sick too.
