DAILY GK UPDATE 19TH OCTOBER


 1.    RBI launches new RTGS system

i. The Reserve Bank of India today launched the new Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system for large-value funds transfer.
ii. The system has several new functionalities including advance liquidity features, gridlock resolution mechanism and hybrid settlement facility, facility to accept future value-dated transactions and options to process multi-currency transactions.
iii. The Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system is a large-value funds transfer system which banks use to settle inter-bank transfers for their own accounts as well as for their customers.
iv. “With its advanced liquidity and queue management features, the new RTGS system is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of financial markets,” said Rajan.
Note: i. The new ISO 20022 compliant RTGS system provides three access options to participants — thick-client, Web-API (through INFINET or any other approved network) and Payment Originator module.
ii. Participants can decide the mode of participation in the system based on the volume of transactions and the cost of setting up the infrastructure.
2.    Financial inclusion can be better achieved through self-help groups: Nabard
i. According to a Nabard (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) report, though the SHG-BLP (self-help group-bank linkage programme) is a step towards bringing the ‘unbanked’ poor into the mainstream banking channel, its formal acceptance as a financial inclusion channel by the central bank is still awaited.
ii. An SHG is a homogeneous group, comprising 15-20 members (mostly women), where members first pool in their savings and give out small loans to needy members.
iii. Once the SHG successfully undertakes savings and credit operations from its own resources, it can borrow from a bank (SHG-BLP) to enhance its pool of resources.
iv. The ‘Status of Microfinance in India’ report observed that a successful programme such as the SHG-BLP, which could link millions of rural poor to the formal banking system, could have been the main instrument for financial literacy and financial inclusion in the country.
v. “There are a number of plausible ways by which matured SHGs could have been participants in the financial inclusion initiative, including being agents of providing direct banking services to the poor at their doorsteps, as a low-cost and efficient alternative.
Note: The Government and the RBI hold 99.50 per cent and 0.50 per cent stake, respectively, in Nabard.
ii. The institution was promoted in 1982 for ensuring sustainable and equitable agriculture and rural prosperity through effective credit support, related services, institution development and other innovative initiatives.
3.    Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban visited India
i. Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary visited India on 16-17 October 2013.
ii. During his visit, India and Hungry signed several important agreements to further strengthen cooperation which includes a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the field of traditional Indian medicine systems.
iii. Earlier this year, India’s Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid had visited Hungary where he discussed regional, bilateral and international issues with his Hungarian counterpart Janos Martonyi.
4.    Infosys wins award for resource management
i.  IT bellwether Infosys Ltd Friday announced it has won the 'Corporate Sustainability Stewardship' award for efficient management of energy, waste and water resources in its production processes and operations.
ii. The Parivartan sustainability leadership awards, instituted by Sustainability Outlook, a not-for-profit social organisation, recognise corporates and their executives who contribute in the field of sustainability every year.
iii. "Our infrastructure and green initiatives head Rohan Parikh was declared finalist in the 'sustainability trailblazer' category at the 2013 annual summit of the sustainable business leadership forum in New Delhi Thursday,
iv. The event also showcased efforts of organisations in conservation, innovation and leadership in sustainability
5.    BCCI Anti-Doping tribunal bans Pradeep Sangwan
i. Pacer Pradeep Sangwan was on Saturday slapped with an 18-month ban from cricket after being found guilty of consuming a banned anabolic steroid by the BCCI’s Anti-Doping Tribunal.
ii. The ban on the 23-year-old Delhi cricketer has been imposed with retrospective effect from May this year when the IPL took place.
iii. The Tribunal has found that the Player has committed an Anti-Doping Violation under Article 2.1 of the Code for the presence of the Prohibited Substance Stanozolol, an Anabolic Steroid,” it added.
iv. Sangwan, who played a stellar role in India’s victorious U-19 World Cup campaign back in 2008 represented Kolkata Knight Riders during the last two editions of the IPL. He has taken 123 wickets in 38 first-class matches.
v. Sangwan, who hails from Najafgarh, played two matches in the IPL against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He could not get a single wicket during the two games.
Note: Sangwan is only the second cricketer in the history of IPL after Pakistani speedster Mohammed Asif to have been found guilty of consuming banned drugs.
6.    Ding Junhui won Indian Open Snooker Title 2013
i. Ding Junhui of China won the 2013 Indian Open Snooker title with a 5-0 victory over Aditya Mehta of India in New Delhi on 18 October 2013.
ii.  Ding Junhui, world number four, 26, scored two century breaks as he earned the 50000 Pounds first prize.
iii. Aditya Mehta, 72nd in the world, became the first Indian player to make the last four of a major ranking event when he reached the semi-finals on 17 October 2013 and he was also first Indian ever to reach the final of the event.
7.    Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre takes oath as new Chief Justice of Gauhati HC
i. In Assam, Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre today took oath as the new Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court at Rajbhawan in Guwahati. Governor J B Patnaik administered the oath to him. Justice Sapre earlier served as the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court.
8.    Noted Malayalam Music Composer K. Raghavan Passed away
i. Noted Malayalam music composer K Raghavan died at Thalassery in Kannur district of Kerala on 19 October 2013. He was 99.
ii. Raghavan infused the folk element into Malayalam film music and his rustic melodies replaced the then prevailing trend of imitations of popular Hindi tunes of the day.
iii. K Raghavan was born to M. Krishnan and Narayani in 1913 at Thalassery, Kannur of Kerala.
iv. The music mastero, who is credited with giving a new direction and identity to Malayalam film music, has scored music for over 60 films in a career spanning for about four decades.
9.    The Largest Air Traffic Control Tower of India Inaugurated at Mumbai Airport
i. The largest Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower of India was inaugurated outside the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai on 18 October 2013.
ii. The tallest ATC tower stands at the length of 84 metres or around 30 storey building. 
iii. The ATC tower is spread over an area of 2800 square metre area and is also equipped with state-of-the-art technology such as electronic flight strips that can reduce the workload of controllers and enhance safety and capacity of the airport. 
iv. It is important to note that India is the 9th largest aviation market of the world and has the traffic increasing at 10 percent annually. 
v. The designing of the ATC was done by Hong Kong-based architectural firm HOK as well as the international engineering designer ARUP. These were chosen after the global competition.
10.  Eminent Telugu Writer Dr. Ravuri Bharadwaja Passed away
i. Eminent Telugu writer and Gyanpeeth award recipient, Dr. Ravuri Bharadwaja passed away in Hyderabad on 18 October 2013. He was 86. 
ii. Ravuri Bharadwaja won Gyanpeeth award for the year 2012 for his well known Telugu novel, Paakudu Raallu, which reflected real life behind the silver screen of the film industry. 


11.  Dhoni powers India to 303/9 in 3rd ODI against Australia
i. Mahendra Singh Dhoni led from the front by smashing an unbeaten 139 as India recovered from a poor start to post a massive 303 for nine against Australia in the third cricket one-dayer of the seven-match series, in Mohali on Saturday
ii. Dhoni rescued India after early jitters as he played a responsible and sensible innings that came off just 121 balls, including 12 fours and five sixes.
iii. The skipper also shared two significant partnerships -- putting on a solid 72-run stand for the fifth wicket with Virat Kohli (68) before joining hands with Ravichandran Ashwin (28) to put up 76 runs for the seventh wicket.
iv. Dhoni, mostly picked on James Faulkner and Watson. He began an over of Faulkner with two consecutive fours and then topped it up with a boundary and a six in Watson’s over to release the pressure.

DAILY GK UPDATE 18TH OCTOBER


1.    India, Brazil to devise internet regulations

i. Brazil and India will work together to devise internet regulations in order to protect online privacy from snooping by other countries.

ii. The partnership was announced in Brazilian capital Brasilia on Tuesday, after a meeting between foreign ministers of Brazil and India, Luiz Alberto Figueiredo and Salman Khurshid. 
iii. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff condemned mass global surveillance as practiced by the US and its intelligence partners, during a speech in September at the UN General Assembly. 
iv. Rousseff called for multilateral internet governance that respects the principles of neutrality. Brazil has been aggressively targeted by US spying agencies, according to recent revelations based on documents leaked by former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden. 
v. While the US insists it intercepts digital communications to prevent terrorist attacks, Brazilian targets, such as the Mines and Energy Ministry and state oil giant Petrobras, indicate the US is also driven by economic motives. 
vi. Brazil and India have agreed to share information of internet security strategies. 
vii. India has one of the world’s most advanced information technology sectors. Brazilian technicians will visit India to learn more about Indian achievements in the field. 
2.    India and Hungary Signed MoU for Promotion of Traditional Systems of Medicine
i. India and Hungary signed the bilateral agreement for the promotion and development of traditional systems of medicine on 17 October 2013.
ii. The main objective of this MoU is to strengthen, promote and develop cooperation in the field of traditional systems of medicine between the two countries on the basis of equality and mutual benefits.
iii. The MoU encourages and promotes cooperation to enhance the use of traditional systems of medicine, exchange of regulatory information on operational licensing to practice traditional medicine. 
iv. The signing of MoU will give boost to bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the areas of traditional medicines which will open new vistas for exploring the potential of economic, commercial and tourism development in both the countries.

Note: It is important to note that India has already signed the agreements like these with other countries such as Malaysia and Trininad and Tobago and is in the process of signing agreements with Russia, Nepal, Srilanka, Serbia and Mexico.
3.    Prime Minister Released Book on Indian Painting by Prof. B.N. Goswami
i. The Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh on 18 October 2013 released a book on Indian painting written by Prof. B.N. Goswami in New Delhi.
ii. Prof. B.N. Goswami is a distinguished art historian, and a leading authority on Indian art and is Professor Emeritus of Art History at the Panjab University, Chandigarh. 
iii. His work covers a wide range Profile and is regarded, especially in the area of Pahari painting, as having influenced serious critical thinking.
iv. He received many honours including the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship, the Rietberg Award from Switzerland for Outstanding Research in Art History, the Padma Shri (1998) and the Padma Bhushan (2008) from the President of India.
4.    RBI to issue 10 rupee notes with new governor Rajan’s signature
i. The Reserve Bank will shortly issue Rs 10 denomination banknotes with rupee symbol bearing the signature of new governor Raghuram Rajan.
ii. As per RBI notification, it will issue these bank notes incorporating rupee symbol on the obverse and reverse, without inset letter in both the numbering panels, in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005 bearing the signature of Rajan.
iii. RBI said that the year of printing - '2013', will be printed on the reverse of the banknote.
5.    Union Government Appointed G B Pradhan as the Chairperson of the CERC
i. Union Government of India appointed on 17 October 2013 Gireesh B. Pradhan, former Secretary of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, as the Chairperson of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC).
ii. Gireesh B. Pradhan , a Maharashtra Cadre IAS officer of the 1977 batch,
iii. He retired from the post of Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in June 2013.
6.    Maya Angelou accepts Mailer Center award
i. The 85—year—old author, poet, dancer and actress was honored during a benefit gala at the New York Public Library, the annual gathering organized by the Mailer Center and writers colony.
ii.  Seated in a wheelchair, she was a vivid presence in dark glasses and a sparkling black dress as she marveled that a girl from a segregated Arkansas village could grow up to become a literary star.
iii. Angelou was introduced by her former editor at Random House, Robert Loomis, and she praised him for talking her into writing her breakthrough memoir, the million—selling “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.” The key was suggesting to her that the book might be too hard to write.
iv. Angelou, a longtime resident of North Carolina, will be back in Manhattan next month to collect an honorary National Book Award medal.
7.    Micromax’s new face is Hugh Jackman
i. New Delhi-based smartphone manufacturer Micromax has stepped outside Indian borders to rope in its brand ambassador.
ii. Academy Award winner Hugh Jackman, best-known for the movies Les Miserables, X-Men and Wolverine, will be associated with the Indian consumer electronics company, a Micromax statement said on Friday.
iii. Jackman will be seen endorsing the soon-to-be-launched Micromax smartphone called Canvas Turbo, which is part of the Canvas series of smartphones for Micromax.
iv. As we look to expand our footprint across the globe in various international markets, the association with Hugh Jackman is an ideal partnership for us to connect with audiences as he is a leading name in the entertainment industry in the world,” Chief Marketing Officer Shubhodip Pal  said.
8.    Manipur Defeated Haryana to Lift 54th Subroto Cup Football Tournament
i. Radha Madhav Sanskrit Vidhyalaya, Nambol, Bishnupur (Manipur) lifted the Girls' title of the 54th Subroto Cup football tournament on 17 October 2013. The final match was held at the Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi. 
ii. Manipur won against Government Senior Secondary School, Alakhpura, Bhiwani (Haryana) by six goals to four. It is the second time that the Manipur team lifted the Girls’ title of Subroto Cup football tournament. 
About the Subroto Cup Football Tournament
i. The Subroto Cup Football Tournament is primarily an inter-school football tournament in India, which is named after Indian Air Force Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee.
ii. The tournament was started in the year 1960 and since then, it is conducted every year. 
iii. It is conducted by the Indian Air Force, with support from India's Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
9.  Sarojini Varadappan, the Renowned Social Worker Died at 92
i. Sarojini Varadappan, the renowned social worker died on 17 October 2013 in Chennai following a brief illness.
ii. She was 92 years old. Sarojini Varadappan was a daughter of the former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Bhakthavatsalam.
iii. She was the President of the Women India Association, an NGO working on women-related issues.
11.  PayUPaisa launches automated payment settlement solution
i. Online payment facility PayUPaisa today announced the launch of all-in-one payment settlement solution, which addresses problems of money settlement and helps marketplaces achieve higher efficiency by providing better control over fund disbursements mechanisms.
ii. As per RBI’s mandate, aggregators need to maintain a nodal bank account and settle payments to sellers within T+2 days, it said in a release.
iii. There is a significant operational cost attached to do this. PayUPaisa takes care of nodal account registration and other regulatory requirements for the sellers, helping marketplaces cut huge cost on seller on boarding, it added.
iv. PayUPaisa is part of PayU India, an online payment firm.
v. It serves businesses like Goibibo, Snapdeal, Bookmyshow, Jabong, Ferns n Petals, Zomato, Tradus, Micromax Mobiles, Groupon India among others.
10.  Pujara drops to 8th in ICC Test rankings
i. Cheteshwar Pujara was the highest-ranked Indian batsman despite dropping a rung to eighth while R Ashwin held on to his eighth position in the bowlers' chart of the ICC Test rankings issued on Friday.
ii. Pujara and Ashwin were the only Indians in the respective top-10s of batsmen and bowlers. Ashwin was also steady at third in the list of all-rounders. 
iii. South Africa's AB de Villiers has achieved a career-best second position in the rankings for Test batsmen, while a seven-wicket victory in the Abu Dhabi Test has guaranteed Pakistan a fourth position in the team rankings.

1.    Shape the future with elderly: Celebrate Int'l Day of Older Persons
i.The day is celebrated by raising awareness about issues affecting the elderly and to appreciate the contributions that they make to society.
ii. The day’s theme for 2013 is ‘The Future we want: What older persons are saying’.
iii. The day serves as a moment to pause and reflect upon the opportunities and challenges of ageing populations in the 21st century and promote the development of a society for all ages.
iv. By 2050, the number of older persons will be twice the number of children in developed countries, and the number of children in developing countries is expected to double" - International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1 annually. 
2.    Ranjan Mathai Appointed as India's High Commissioner to United Kingdom
i. Former Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai appointed as India's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
ii. He will succeed noted economist and veteran diplomat Dr Jaimini Bhagwati.
iii. Ranjan Mathai joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1974 and has served in Indian embassies in Vienna, Colombo, Washington, Tehran and Brussels.
iv. Ranjan Mathai served as Foreign Secretary for a period of two years and handed over the charge to his successor Sujatha Singh in July 2013.
3.    Ravi Shankar Narsimhan was presented with Friendship Award
i. A senior Indian journalist, Ravi Shankar Narsimhan, on 29 September 2013 was presented with Friendship award by China-the highest honor given to foreigners.
ii. Narsimhan is the executive editor in the overseas edition of the Beijing based China Daily. Ravi Shankar hails from Andhra Pradesh.
iii. Narsimhan has worked with China Daily for 11 years. He was given the award for helping China better tell its stories to the outside world. He is one among the 50 foreign experts from 20 countries and diverse fields, who have been rewarded.
iv. The Friendship Award is an annual award given by the Chinese government to honour outstanding foreign experts in China.
4.    Growth will exceed 5% in 2013-14: FinMin 
i. Finance Ministry on Tuesday said economy will grow by over 5 percent in the current fiscal on back of high farm productivity and investments and promised more steps to boost growth.
ii. "It (GDP) will be more than 5 per cent, it cannot be less than 5 per cent," Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram said when asked about forecast by private analysts that growth could be lower than 5 percent in 2013-14. 
iii. The Q2 GDP growth should be better than first quarter... We need to incentivise growth... As far as the interest rate is concerned, it is completely the domain of RBI and Governor will take a call on that," Mayaram said. 
iv. The Current Account Deficit (CAD), Mayaram said, was expected to be less than USD 70 billion or 3.7 percent of GDP for the full fiscal. 
v. The economy grew at a four year low of 4.4 percent in the April-June quarter of current year. In 2012-13 fiscal the growth was at a decade low level of 5 percent. 
vi. RBI is scheduled to announce its second quarter policy review on 29th October.
5.    India-Mozambique trade could double by 2016: Anand Sharma
i. Trade between India and Mozambique could double to $3 billion by 2016 from the current level of $1.28 billion.
ii. This was stated by Commerce Minister Anand Sharma during his meeting with Mozambique's Industry and Trade Minister Armando Inroga in the Mozambique capital Maputo,
iii. Sharma was on a two-day visit to that country September 27-28 during which he also met Prime Minister Alberto Vaquina of Mozambique.
iv. Bilateral trade has doubled from $631.76 million in 2011-12 to $1.28 billion in 2012-13, surpassing the one billion US dollars bilateral trade target set during Mozambique President Armando Guebuza's visit to India in 2010.
v. India has extended Lines of Credit (LoC) worth $640 million to Mozambique. Three LoCs worth $216.4 million for development work in Mozambique were signed during the visit of Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur in July.
vi. India is the 8th largest foreign investor in Mozambique with total investments estimated at more than $500 million.

6.    RBI to infuse Rs10,000 cr to ease market liquidity
i. The Reserve Bank of India will infuse 10 thousand crore rupees by purchasing government securities on 7 October, to ease liquidity in the market.
ii. In a release issued yesterday, RBI stated that based on the assessment of prevailing and evolving market conditions, it has decided to conduct open market operations by purchasing government securities for an aggregate amount of 10 thousand crore rupees.
iii. Open market operations refer to the sale or purchase of government securities with the objective of adjusting rupee liquidity conditions in the market.
7.    Phone lines allotment: CBI books Dayanidhi Maran,
i. The CBI has filed a case against the then Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran and BSNL officials for allegedly allotting 300 high-speed telephone lines to Maran’s residence in Chennai which were extended to his brother’s channel.
ii. CBI sources said an FIR was filed following its preliminary enquiry when it found enough material to proceed with a regular case against Maran and BSNL officials — the then CGM K. Bramhanathan and MP Veluswami.
iii. The sources said these 323 residential lines were allegedly in the name of BSNL General Manager connecting the Boat House residence of Maran with the office of Sun TV through a dedicated underground cable during his tenure as Telecom Minister.
iv. The probe had started in 2011, nearly four years after getting complaints that a ‘virtual’ telephone exchange was allegedly set-up at the then Telecom Minister’s for facilitating data transfer from Sun TV.
v. The CBI in its report to the Telecom Secretary had alleged that these lines were for the use of large commercial enterprises to meet special needs such as video conferencing or transmission of huge volume of digital data for which heavy fee is charged but Sun TV got it for free.
8.    Aga Khan, a Swiss-Born Philanthropist and Muslim Spiritual Leader Visited India
i. Aga Khan, a Swiss-Born Philanthropist and Muslim Spiritual Leader visited India.
ii. During the official visit, Aga Khan the unveiled restored Humayun’s Tomb in New Delhi on 18 September 2013.
iii. The task of restoration was done by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, in partnership with the Archaeological Survey of India, and with the support of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.
iv. The restoration work took place on the public private partnership (PPP) model and it is first of its kind on the India’s heritage site. The project was funded primarily by the Aga Khan Trust. 
9.    Vice President of India released a commemorative postage stamp of Baba Jumdev
i. The Vice President of India, M. Hamid Ansari released a commemorative postage stamp in the memory of Baba Jumdev at a function in Gondia, Maharashtra on 30 September 2013.
ii. Baba Jumdev was a prominent spiritual leader and revered social activist. He was a spiritual guide and a social reformer for who worked towards the service of humanity. 
iii. M. Hamid Ansari explained that through a postage stamp, the social and spiritual message of Baba Jamudev will reach all over the country.
iv.  Baba Jamudev made valuable contributions towards reforming and improving the society. He called upon his followers to be good human beings by adhering to compassion and forgiveness.
10.  Rasheed Masood gets 4 years in jail, set to lose RS seat
i. Rajya Sabha member and Congress leader, Rasheed Masood, was sentenced to four years in jail by a Delhi court in a corruption case, becoming the first MP to lose his seat after a recent Supreme Court judgement had removed the immunity for convicted lawmakers.
ii. 67 year old Masood, who attains the dubious distinction of being the first lawmaker to be disqualified after the 10th July Supreme Court judgement, was immediately taken into custody by the court. 
iii.Special CBI Judge J P S Malik on Tuesday handed down the jail term to Masood after holding him guilty of fraudulently nominating undeserving candidates to MBBS seats allotted to Tripura in medical colleges across the country from the central pool as Health Minister in the National Front government of 1990. The court also imposed costs of Rs 60,000 on Masood. 
iv. Besides Masood, the court has awarded four-year jail term each to two other public servants, Gurdial Singh, a former IPS officer, and retired IAS official Amal Kumar Roy, the then secretary of Tripura Chief Minister Sudhir Ranjan Majumdar. 
v. The court, which has convicted nine students in the case, has also given one year imprisonment each to nine of them. 
vi. The nine students, who had fraudulently got admission in the medical colleges, were convicted for cheating. 
11.  Salve Challenger Trophy 2013-14 Won by India Blue
i. India Blue cricket squad won the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy by defeating Delhi by 50 runs in the final at the Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore on 29 September 2013.
ii. Electing to bat first, the Indian blue posted a total of 274 for nine in their 50 overs before bowling out the strong Delhi batting line-up for 224 in 44.4 overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar selected for Man-of-the match for his four wickets.
iii. Yuvraj singh captained the India Blue team, whereas Virat Kohli captained the Delhi team. 
iv. The teams which are participated in the tournament are India Blue, India Red and Delhi. 
v. The 2012-13 edition of the tournament was won by India B Squad.
12.  Indian basketball team win bronze at KFC U-21 3ON3 International Challenge
i. Indian basketball team has won bronze medal at KFC under-21 3ON3 International Challenge in Beijing.
ii. Agencies report that the Indian team comprising Ajay Pratap Singh, Lovneet Atwal, P Vijay and Amit Kanarjee won the medal with better scoring rate than other semi-finalist Chinese Taipei.
iii. In quarterfinals, India beat China 21-17. In semifinal, India lost to Australia 13-16.
iv. Lovneet also secured a gold medal for India in KFC 3ON3 International Challenge 3-Pointer shooting competition.
13.  Petra Kvitova Won Singles Title at WTA Toray Pan Pacific Open
i. The Czech Republican tennis player Petra Kvitova defeated Germany's Angelique Kerber in the final to win singles title at WTA Pan Pacific Open at Tokyo.
ii. Seventh seed Petra Kvitova, of the Czech Republic, won 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 over fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber to claim the tournament title for the first time.
iii. It was her 11th WTA title and evened her tournament finals appearances at 2-2 in 2013.
iv. Petra Kvitova won her first Grand Slam by defeating fifth seed Maria Sherapova from Russia 6-3, 6-4 in the Wimbledon women’s final on 3 July 2011
