Boats and Streams Shortcuts

 Boats and Streams Shortcuts

Friends, today we are going to discuss another important topic of Aptitude section Boats and Streams. Before going to the topic, Let us know what is Downstream and what is Upstream. Because these concepts are the heart of Boats and Streams.

Downstream : In water,the direction along the stream is called downstream. I mean, If a boat or a swimmer swims in the same direction as the stream, then it is called downstream. Obviously the boat or swimmer require less efforts to travel using downstream. Because the stream itself helps the objects to move.
Remember, as the object moves along with the water, the stream helps the object.
So, the down stream speed (DS) is
DS =  U+V
where U is the speed of the object in the still (calm) water
V is the speed of the water.

Upstream : If the boat or the swimmer is swimming in the opposite direction in which the stream is passing is called upstream. In simple words, the direction against the stream is called upstream.
Remember, as the object moves against the water pushes the object in opposite direction.
So, the upstream speed (US) is
US = U-V
where U is the speed of the object in the still (calm) water
V is the speed of the water.
Important Formulas on Boats and Streams :
  • Let us assume that the speed of the boat in still water is U km/hr and the speed of stream is V km/hr then, as mentioned above :
    • Speed downstream = (u+v)km/hr
    • Speed upstream = (u-v)km/hr
  • If the speed downstream is a km/hr and the speed upstream is b km/hr then :
    • Speed in still water = 1/2(a+b) km/hr
    • Rate of stream = 1/2(a-b)km/hr
Let us do some problems on boats and streams :
1)A man can row upstream at 8kmph and downstream at 10kmph. Find the man's rate in still water and the rate of current.
Solution : Rate in still water = 1/2 (10+8)km/hr = 9km/hr
            Rate of current = 1/2(10-8)km/hr =1km/hr

2)A boat can travel with a speed of 12km/hr in still water . If the speed of the stream is 5km/hr , find the time taken by boat to go 68km downstream.
solution : Speed downstream = (12+5)km/hr  = 17 km/hr
             Time taken to travel 68km downstream = 68/17hrs  =4hrs

3)If a man rows at the rate of 5kmph in still water and his rate against the current is 3.5kmph, then man's rate along the current is ?
solutin : Let us consider the rate along the current be x kmph.

          Then, 1/2(x+3.5) = 5  or X= 6.5 Kmph
4)A boat covers a certain distance downstream in 1 hour, while it comes back  in 3/2 hours. If the speed of the stream is 3kmph, what is the speed of the boaat in still water ?

Solution : Let the speed of the boat in still water be x kmph.

           Then speed downstream = (X+3)kmph
                Speed upstraem = (x-3)kmph
                  Therefore (X+3)*1 = (x-3)*3/2
                     2x+6=3x-9  => X= 15kmph
5)A speed of a boat in still water is 10 km/hr. If it can travel 26km downstream and 14km upstream in the same time , the speed of the stream is ?

solution : let the speed of the stream be x km/hr. then,
           Speed downstream=(10+x)km/hr,
            speed upstream= (10-x)km/hr
             Therefore  26/(10+x)= 14/(10-x)
              260-26x= 140+14x  => 40x=120
                 x=3km/hr
6)The speed of the boat in still water is 10km/hr and the rate of the current is 3 km/hr. The distance travelled downstream in 12 minutes is ?

solution : Speed downstream =(10+3)kmph= 13kmph
          Distance travelled = 13*12/60 = 2.4 kmph
7)what is the speed of the boat in still water ?

i)The speed downstream of the boat is twice the speed upstream.
ii)The sum of the speeds of the boat , upstream and downstream is 12kmph

solution: Let the speed of the boat be x km/hr . Then
               i) Speed downstream = 2x km/hr
               ii)Says, the speed of the boat in still water = (1/2*12) = 6km /hr
8)A man can row upstream at 5kmph and downstream at 15kmph .The speed of the stream is ?

  Solution :    Speed of the stream = 1/2 (15-5) = 5kmph
9)A boat takes a total time three hours to travel downstreams from P to Q and the upstream back from Q to P. what is the speed of boat in still water ?

i)The speed of the river current is 1 km per hour

ii)The distance between P and Q is 4 km.

solution :  i) The speed of the current = 1km/hr

             ii)PO =4km
                let the speed of the boat in still water be x km/hr
                    4/(x+1) +4/(x-1) =3
10)A man takes twice long to row a distance against the stream as to row the same distance in favour of the stream .the ratio of the speed of the boat in still water is ?

solution : Let man's upstream be xkmph . then . his rate downstream =3x km/hr
             (Speed in still water) : (Speed of stream ) = (2x+x/2) : (2x-x/2) =3x/2 : x/2
              => 3:1

Key with Explanations for the Sentence Correction Problems of English

 Key with Explanations for the Sentence Correction Problems of English

Friends, here is the key with detailed explanations to our previous post on English Sentence Correction Practice Problems for Bank PO Exams. So we request you to read that post here and try to solve on your own before seeing the solutions below. We hope all of you are ready with your answers. Now lets have a look the the answers with explanations. The underlined part is the error.
1. The things I told you has been done.
Here we are talking about things (plural). So we should use have been instead of has been. The correct sentence is The things I told you about have been done.

2. I do not know why I felt so grief
* Here grief means Deep Sorrow
There are two errors in this sentence,
You shouldn't use the word so.
Here is grief is noun. So you can't feel grief (grammatically incorrect).
So you can say I do not know why I feel so sad (instead of grief)
3. The old lady is poor stricken.
*here stricken means "affected by being poor (poverty)).

here poor is an adjective, stricken is also a noun. We can't put them together. Its grammatically incorrect. So you can use the noun form of poor (poverty) so the sentence will be The old lady is poverty stricken.

4. I will drink milk today morning.
The above sentence is grammatically incorrect. You should say I will drink milk this morning.

Some important points to remember :
Today morning --> This morning
Yesterday morning --> Last morning
Tomorrow morning --> The coming morning.
5. He said he will unable to help me.
You should use the be form after will. So the correct sentence is He said he will be unable to help me.
6. Not only is Javed handsome but also he is very friendly.
The correct structure of the sentence will be Not only is Javed handsome, but he is also very friendly.

7. Thus I have been lived alone for the past two years.
Have been is there. So, there should be an ing form. So the correct sentence is,
Thus I have been living alone for the past two years.

Important Note : I've been observing that people often confuse about the usage of for and since
for is used when you give the time duration.
ex : for the past two years. for the last two weeks etc.
since is used when you give the starting point of the time.
ex : since 1980, since 1st July 2013 etc
8. This chapter comprises of seven sections.
Comprises of is grammatically incorrect. You should say consists of or just comprises. So the correct form(s) of the sentence will be,
This chapter comprises seven sections.
This chapter consists of seven sections.
9. The man was sweating proficiently.
We use the proficiently when somebody is really good at it.
Ex : proficient driver, proficient dancer, proficient in a foreign language etc. Sweating is not a skill :P So we shouldn't use proficiently here.
You can use profusely here if you want to express Extravagant / Abundant.
One more important point to note : Now a days everybody using "sweating" while talking about humans. But grammatically its a blunder. We use sweating only for animals. For humans you should use the word perspire.
Animals ---> Sweats / Sweating
Humanbeings --> Perspire / Perspiring
So you can write, The man is perspiring profusely
10. I also have been sick too.
Here also and sick, represent the same meaning. So you shouldn't use them both. Any one of them is enough. So you can say,
I have been sick too.

Computer Software - Basics

 Computer Software - Basics

Friends, in our last post we have discussed about computer Hardware. In this post we shall discuss about Computer Software. The Software is very important part of the computer that people cannot touch. Software is a set of programs that makes the computer run, and controlling everything that the computer does.
Confused ? lets discuss with a small example. Assume that you were a new born baby. When you born there was nothing there in brain. It was just like a white paper. Later your parents, relatives, well wishers taught you THINGS. They give you instructions like This is good, This is Bad, you should do this, you shouldn't do that etc. Those instructions helps you to perform your tasks in an efficient manner. Have you ever heard of Tarzan? He was also a human being, but born and brought up in Forest. He just behaves like an animal, can't talk or think like human beings. You and he both have same type of brains. Then where is the difference? The difference lies in the instructions given by the people. In simple words, your brain programmed to survive in this civilized society but his brain didn't. Got the point?
Now back to our topic, Computer is just like the human brain. Its of no use and it can't work if you don't give proper instructions to it. These of instructions are called Computer Program. The computer program helps the computer to perform a specific task. A program is said to be running / executing when the computer is using that program. A set of programs is called Software.
Softwares are of two types :
  1. System Software
  2. Application Software
The System software consists of low level (binary) programs that interact with the computer at the very basic level. Examples of system softwares are Operating Systems, Compilers and Utilities for managing computer resources (printer software, scanner software etc).
System Software Examples
The Application software consists of programs that are required for a user. The application software is also called End-user programs. Examples of application softwares are Emails, Word Processors, Spread sheets, Games etc.
Application Softwares
Important Note : We cant run the application softwares without the help of System Softwares.
Synopsis :
Set of Instructions -----> Program
Set of Programs -------> Software

Programmer : The person who write programs / instructions.
Programming Language : The language in which the programmer write the instructions to train and work with computers.
Ex : C, C++, Java, SQL etc
Thats all for now friends. In our next post we shall discuss in detail about system and application softwares. You can read computer knowledge related topics from here. Happy Reading :)
