Reviews of IBPS PO Online Exam held on 27th October 2013 - Evening Shift

Hi Friends,

This is Ajeet a BE Grad in Comp science(1 yr professional exp).

First of all I would like to say that paper was extremely tough. I have given many competitions like JEE, AIEEE, CMAT but was never horrified this much. First I will write subject wise review

GA- I started with this section. I had studied well with two magazines PD and BSC and also a banking awareness. but this section also horrified me I did 22 with 100% accuracy. This one was easiest among all 5 but still tougher. If you pick last years 50 questions and attempt them with remembrance of some Italian marines issue and banking awareness you will get more than 24 for sure if you have studied. It took me 16 minutes but I rechecked it once more in 2-3 minutes just to be sure as i had in mind last years cut off then i switched to COMP

COMP- I started with 1-2-3 all blank like Amazon business type and I got frustrated what kind of Computer Engineer I am? I went to 16 then it was ok I did like this 16-20 11-15 then came to 4 to 10 again 2 remained blank. Overall this section was tougher than GA.I might expect around 100% accuracy in this section. Arts students will find it more difficult as there were no straight questions of Computer knowledge as such. till now my timer was showing 95:48 I switched to English.

ENG- I started reading passage 2-3 lines I got tensed then left and searched for those 10 questions of fill in the blanks I did them with then I did Para jumbling but it was very difficult and time taking.I came back to one passage it was economic and quite philosophical I did this in around 12 minutes. for other passage i just did Antonyms and Synonyms as it is easier to get meaning from sentence. I did 29 overall. I expect around 80% accuracy This was tougher than Comp and there were no straight questions and lengthy also. Then i switched to MATH. At this time my timer was 73:20.

MATH- Here comes the BIG destroyer. I thought I would divide around 36 minutes for remaining two sections.I started with q1 It was toughest DI. I started leaving very lengthy questions. 1-2-3-4 all blank I could do 5th question and NEXT I found tough. Then I adopted a strategy of Search and solve. Here comes the more bigger problem because you will see those RED marks which you left. It will create a mental pressure on you. I have never scored less than 75% in any MATH exam be it IIT AIEEE CMAT LICAAO(25/30) or even SBIPO 2013(39 attempt 39 score). But this was a big blow to my belief of knowing maths. I somehow managed 18 with 100% accuracy. Timer was 35:10

REAS- Ye bhi maths ka judwa bhai hi tha. One puzzle was easy but still a mind treasure. I did only one puzzle. Syllogisms were very lengthy and provoking. I did 23 with 100% accuracy. You can do a few more but how can A person control his mind with so many speculative questions of Assumptions and Conclusions around 15 or so. 5-7 ho to theek hai itne saron ko negative marking hote hue attempt karne ke liye JIGRA chahiye. This was only 10% easier than MATHS.

CONCLUSION:- DON'T Panic. CUT OFFS CANNOT BE AS PREVIOUS PAPERS. For this I will provide some BORING but useful stats of my previous exams.

CAUTION:- This exam was not BAAP not DAADA but was PARDAADA of SBI PO.

Overall 149/250. Was short of 2 marks. There were approx 3000s qualified. So I can expect my AIR less than 4000.

LIC AAO 223/300 with no sectional cut off. Short of 3 marks. Total qualified 2250. I can expect my rank less than 3500.

IBPS PO:- Now comes the CALCULATION part.

Total no of candidates in SBI PO and IBPS almost similar around 17 lakhs. Total no of seats in IBPS PO around 20000. Written selections around 60000 anyhow it will be greater than 40000. Ab agar ye MATHS me 24/50 cut off lagate hain to pure Hindustan me 2000 bhi mushkil se milenge. So don't PANIC. If you are sincere enough aur Padhai me sare sections ke sath imandari se pesh aaye ho aur koi bedhbhav nahi kiya hai to you will surely be THROUGH. Just be cool and concentrate on time division b/w sections.

I am hoping my selection as I surely stand under 10000 among banking aspirants in INDIA and predicting CUT OFF marks for you all(These are my personal view). Just forgive me if you don't agree.

Federal Bank PO 27th October - Evening Session - Review

Hello Friends,

        I have attended the clerk exam of Federal Bank on 27-10-2013 (evening session). It was quite easy.. and the only thing I found difficult was with the time management.. Here is the sectional wise review of my exam.

Reasoning :
was quite easy and i was able to attend arnd 35/50.. the questions were frm seating arrangement (circle-inside-outside kinda one).. and few question frm input output arrangement, syllogism, statement and assumption, blood relation and coded realtion.. no questions frm non-verbal reasoning..

Numerical Ability :
lik three data interpretation and it was kinda lengthy.. difficult to finish with in time.. few questions from the number series.. and asusual, train, SI CI problems.. and overall i can say it was too lengthy and time consuming.. i could able to attend oly 16 questions..

English :
two passage type was given and error finding questions was lik 10.. overall it was okay..

Computer :
question was basic things from networking and VB, can able to attend 15-16..

General Awareness :
most of the question were frm banking awareness.. and few questions from current affairs.. was kinda hard..

Role of SEBI in Regulating Capital Market

Friends, in our last post we have discussed about the basic details about the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) along with its objectives and functions.  In this post we shall discuss about Role of SEBI in Regulating Capital Market.

SEBI has played a significant role in regulating capital markets since its inception. It was mainly set up with two main objectives. those are  

1. developing the capital markets
2. protecting the investors' interests

To fulfill these objectives, it has taken up number of steps and introduced reforms in capital market. It has been constantly making new initiatives to ensure that the underdeveloped and unregulated capital markets are properly and effectively reformed so that they grow, integrate and consolidate over a period of time.

SEBI Mainly concentrated on the following areas of capital markets

1. Increasing Market Transparency : To achieve this objective it has taken steps to improve disclosure standards.
2. Improving the standards of Corporate Governance : To achieve this, SEBI focused its attention on composition of board of directors, remuneration of directors, constituti0on of audit committees etc. Stock markets has to seek a report from each listed company on compliance of corporate governance.
3. Improving Market Efficiency : To achieve this objective, the SEBI seeded up the process of dematerialization and taken steps to introduce rolling settlement in a phased way.
4. Reduction of Transaction Cost : The margin system was refined.
5. Enhancing the Market Safety : To achieve this SEBI has introduced surveillance system. The main purpose of survelience system is to bring integrity, safety and stability in the Indian Securities market so that scams are either eliminated or their impact is minimized.

Despite SEBI's major policy initiatives for the development of securities market over last nine years, the fruits of these efforts were not clearly evident because o fa number of factors such as

1. Sluggish markets all over the world
2. Cross-border complexities,
3. Impact of other financial markets like currency, commodities and property
4. Footloose attitude of many of the players in different markets and so on.

SEBI has been successful in terms of setting up a mature regulatory framework and establishing proper monitoring system through its market surveillance, though there were cases where some of the share brokers and other market players through their ingenuity and smartness took the capital markets for a ride.

SEBI has all the powers of a civil court under the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908 for discharging the above functions and it can

1. Direct for production of books and accounts and other documents, at such place and such time as may be specified (by SEBI)
2. Summon and enforce the attendance of persons and examining them on oath
3. Inspect any books, registers and other documents of any person refferred to

RBI raises Interest Rates again

The Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan has presented his second monetary policy review today (29th October 2013 - Tuesday). In it he raised the Repo Rate, at which the central bank lends to banks by 25 basis points (bps) to 7.75 percent to fight stubbornly high inflation (earlier it was 7.50% which was continuing since  20th September 2013). He also slashed the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate by 0.25 to 8.75 percent. He left the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) and statutory liquidity ratios unchanged at 4 percent and 23 percents respectively. Many things have changed over the last six weeks after his first review. The most important is the rupee’s movement against the dollar. The currency has pulled back about 10 percent from its life low of 68.80 against the greenback. Lets wait and the advantages this new changes will bring.

1.    Global Gender Gap Report 2013: India Ranked at 101 Place

i. Global Gender Gap Report 2013, which was published on 25 October 2013 by World Economic Forum- India was ranked 101 out of 136 countries on Gender Gap index. 

ii. In 2012 Report, India secured 105th position in the Gender Gap Index of 135 countries.

iii. The Global Gender Gap Report 2013 Report revealed that world’s gender gaps narrowed slightly in 2013 on the back of “definite if not universal improvements” in economic equality and political participation between the sexes.

iv. The worst performing countries are Yemen (136), Pakisthan (135) and Chad (134).

2.    India Signed Pact with World Bank for Uttar Pradesh Water Sector Restructuring Project

i. Government of India on 25 October 2013 signed an agreement with World Bank for credit of 360 million US Dollar for the second phase of Uttar Pradesh Water Sector Restructuring Project. 

ii. The agreement was signed by Nilaya Mitash, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Government of India and Country Director of the World Bank, Onno Ruhl. Similarly the Project Agreement was signed by Deepak Singhal, Principal Secretary, Department of Irrigation on behalf of the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

iii. The objective of the project is to support the State on capacity building of Water Users Association, rehabilitation and modernization of irrigation, development of Basin River planning strategies and flood management systems.

The project has six main components:

1.Strengthening of State Level Water Institutions and Inter Sector Coordination 
2.Modernization and Rehabilitation of Irrigation and Drainage Systems 
3.Consolidation and Enhancement of Irrigation Institution Reforms 
4.Enhancing Agriculture Productivity and On-Farm Water Management 
5.Feasibility studies and Preparation Activities for the Next Phase 
6.Project Coordination and Monitoring. 

3.    World Bank approves $250-m aid for Uttarakhand

i. The World Bank has approved $250-million assistance for Uttarakhand, which was hit hard by rains and landslides in June that killed 580 people, to help the State undertake rehabilitation work and strengthen its capacity for disaster management.

ii. “In order to respond in a timely manner, the project was fast-tracked under the World Bank’s emergency procedures and was prepared within a three-month period,” said a release.

iii. India had sought assistance from multilateral agencies like the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for undertaking rehabilitation work in Uttarakhand. ADB too is expected to finalise its assistance package soon.

iv. Earlier, a joint World Bank and ADB team conducted a Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (JRDNA) at the request of the Indian Government to rebuild the state’s infrastructure and assets lost in the June disaster.

v. JRDNA has estimated the physical damages across a range of sectors and calculated the cost of reconstruction at about $661 million.

4.    Corporation Bank tops in loans to small units

i. The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises has assigned Corporation Bank No. 1 rank under the ‘National Awards for Excellence in MSE (micro and small enterprises) Lending’ for 2012-13.

ii. According to a press statement by the bank, the ranking was acknowledged at the 18th meeting of the Standing Committee for National Awards to Public Sector Banks recently. Corporation Bank has been ranked based on its performance in contributing to the MSE lending for 2012-13, it said.

5.    Himachal Pradesh became Second State after Haryana to introduce NVQF

i. Himachal Pradesh on 26 October 2013 became the second state after Haryana to introduce Union National Vocational Qualitative Framework (NVQF) Scheme.

ii. The scheme has been implemented by the All India Technical Education Council and the National Skill Development Council.

Note: i. As per the scheme, 70 skill development councils will be established and each council will be given specific trades.

ii. The scheme was being implemented for students of Class IX to Class XI and every student has to clear four levels to get the certificate.

iii. The programme is being introduced in one hundred schools and each school will have to adopt two trades out of five - Information Technology, Education, Retail Security, Automobile and Health Care.

6.    Ethiopia banned its Citizens from Travelling Abroad for Work

i. Ethiopia's government on 24 October 2013 temporarily banned its citizens from travelling abroad to look for work.

ii. The government took this decision because many Ethiopians had lost their lives or undergone untold physical and psychological trauma due to illegal human trafficking. The Ethiopian government had taken various steps to limit the suffering of its citizens, including setting up a national council and a taskforce to educate them.

iii. The scarcity of work opportunities contributes mainly fuelling emigration from Ethiopia, which has Africa's second largest population. According to the official figures, Youth unemployment was estimated at more than 50 percent.

iv. Many Ethiopians migrate to Saudi Arabia, travelling via Yemen by sea and entering the country illegally. Thousands of others go to Israel, South Africa and Europe. Most of the migrants end up being smuggled, trafficked or subjected to mental and physical torture.

7.    4 day WAF to be organized at Hyderabad from Nov 4

i. A four-day World Agricultural Forum Congress (WAF) will be organized at Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh from 4th of November this year.

ii. The theme is re-shaping agriculture for sustainable future focus on small farm holders.

iii. Talking to reporters in New Delhi today, Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister Kanna Lakshmi Narayana said the conference will aim at focussing on creating prosperity through attention to establishing food security and investment in agriculture.

iv. Lakshmi Narayana also said an Agri-Tech Trade fair will also be organized parallel to WAF Congress-2013. He said arrangements are being made for mobilization of around two thousand farmers on each day for Agri-Tech Trade Fair. 

Note: 2011 World Congress was held in Brussels with the objective, the role of Latin America in feeding the world in 2050.

8.    Tarun Chatarjee appointed Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh State Human Rights Commission

i. The Uttar Pradesh Government on 25 October 2013 appointed retired Justice Tarun Chaterjee as the new chairman of the state Human Rights Commission.

ii. State government also nominated Justice UK Dhawan and Asha Tiwari as the members of the Commission.

iii. Tarun Chaterjee (68-year-old) was the chief justice at the Allahabad high court in 2003 and retired as a Supreme Court judge in 2010.

9.    Government sanctioned a new Plastic Park for Odisha

i. Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers on 25 October 2013 sanctioned setting up of a Plastic Park at Siju Village, Kujanga Tehsil of Jagatsinghpur District in Odisha.

ii. A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) called Paradeep Plastic Park Limited would set up the Plastic Park. 

iii. The project will receive a grant of 40 crore rupees by the Government of India of which 8 crore rupees will be released sooner.

iv. The Plastic Park is being established near IOLC. The infrastructure related the micro, small, medium and large units in the Plastic Park will be facilitated by the Paradeep Refinery and it has the necessary state-of-the art infrastructure

v. The park will open opportunities to the entrepreneurs in and around districts like Balasore, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Paradeep, and other districts of Odisha to set up new venture.

10.  BCCI terminates contract of IPL team Pune Warriors for non-payment of franchise fee

i. The working committee of the Board of Cricket Control of India has terminated the contract of the Indian Premier League team Pune Warriors for non-payment of franchise fee. The team did not pay a bank guarantee of 174 crore rupees. 

ii. The owner of the Pune Warriors - The Sahara Group - have been on collision course with the BCCI after the board encashed its bank guarantee due to non-payment of franchise fee. Pune Warriors was bought by Sahara for 1702 crore rupees in 2010 and is the most expensive franchise on the IPL roster.

11.  English Football Association marking 150th anniversary today

i. The world's oldest national football body, the English Football Association, or FA is marking its 150th anniversary today. It was established at a meeting in a London Tavern on the 26th of October, 1863 as eleven football clubs and schools associations agreed to a set of common rules for the sport.

ii. A special gala dinner is taking place later today where on display will be a book containing the handwritten 13 original laws of football.

12.  Alok claims silver at World Billiards

i. Indian cueist Alok Kumar could not add the World Billiards trophy to his cabinet as he lost in the final to local favourite David Causier to settle for the silver medal at the mega-event here.

ii. Alok, a former Asian champion, lost 6-1 -- 150 (123)-06, 150 (114)-11, 150 (64)-81, 150 (85)-13, 150 (109)-92, 51-150 (53), 150 (124)-124 (93).

iii. On the other hand, two-time runner-up Causier lifted his first ever world title here at the Northern Snooker Centre. In the final he defeated Alok in a one-sided affair.

iv. Alok is the only player in the country, who has won titles in every discipline.

DAILY GK UPDATE 25TH OCTOBER

1.    HSBC lowers India’s CAD forecast for FY’14 to 3.4%

i. Global financial services major HSBC today lowered India’s current account deficit (CAD) forecast for this financial year to 3.4 per cent of GDP from 4.1 per cent earlier.

ii. HSBC said the country’s CAD is at an unsustainable level, and expected to gradually decline in the coming years and in 2014-15, it is likely to be at 3.2 per cent of GDP.

iii. HSBC’s CAD projections factored the increase in imports during the festive season and rise in coal imports to help meet demand from power plants in the coming months.

iv. In the next fiscal year, FY15, we expect the deficit to hold broadly steady in nominal terms and decline to 3.2 per cent of GDP.

v. CAD, the difference between inflow and outflow of foreign exchange, had declined to 3.6 per cent in the January-March quarter after touching a record high of 6.5 per cent in the October-December quarter.

2.    Now, open an Axis Bank account using Aadhaar card

i. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is going ahead and launching new services even as the decision on whether the Aadhaar card is mandatory for getting government subsidies is pending before the Supreme Court.

ii. In a new initiative, Axis Bank entered into a tie up with the UIDAI that will enable the bank to open accounts by using the 12-digit Aadhaar number of the customer.

iii. The bank will fulfill the Reserve Bank of India’s norms on know-your-customer verification electronically (e-KYC) by using the biometric data of the customer.

iv. The fingerprints, once scanned at the bank’s biometric device, will enable the bank to collect data such as name, address and telephone number of the customer electronically from the UIDAI.

3.    SC-appointed probe panel invites information on Meiyappan

i. The committee probing the Indian Premier League (IPL) spot-fixing episode sought information from the public regarding allegations of betting against Gurunath Meiyappan and the other accused in the scandal on Thursday.

ii. The Supreme Court appointed committee, headed by former Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and including Additional Solicitor General L. Nageshwar Rao and senior advocate Nilay Dutta, had its first meeting on Thursday after being appointed early this month.

iii. The committee decided on the schedule of meetings after “perusal” of the Supreme Court order.

iv. The committee is investigating charges of betting and spot-fixing in the IPL matches against Meiyappan, son-in-law of Board president N. Srinivasan and allegedly the team principal of Chennai Super Kings, the accused players and the team owner of Rajasthan Royals.

4.    Oltmans to be named High Performance Director

i. The Government of India will appoint Hockey India’s Director High Performance Roelant Oltmans as Chief Coordinator and High Performance Director for Indian Hockey.

ii. He is all set to be appointed till Rio Olympics 2016 keeping in view all the major events taking place in the next three years.

iii. Oltmans was firstly hired by Hockey India (HI) as Director High Performance in January this year as part of its plan to further professionalise the sport of hockey.

iv. The former Dutch coach, who worked with the Dutch Olympic Committee as its Performance Manager for Elite Sports, is also an International Hockey Federation (FIH) Master Coach. Oltmans is also the chief coach with the Uttar Pradesh Wizards for the Hero Hockey India League.

5.    Simona Halep won Kremlin Tennis Cup 2013

i. Simona Halep of Romania defeated Samantha Stosur of Australia 7-6 (1), 6-2 to win the Kremlin Cup on 20 October 2013 at Moscow, Russia. It was the fifth WTA singles championship for Simona Halep.

iii. Simona Halep (born on 27 September 1991) is Romanian professional tennis player and the currently ranked no. 14 in the WTA singles Rankings.

Note: In men’s singles, top-seeded Richard Gasquet of France defeated Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the final of the Kremlin Cup. It was the 10th WTA singles championship for Richard Gasquet.

6.    Shah Rukh Khan Appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador for South Korea

i. Shah Rukh Khan, the Bollywood actor, was on 23 October 2013 appointed as the goodwill ambassador for South Korea. He was appointed as the public diplomat as well as an ambassador of India’s soft power. 

ii. Shah Rukh Khan will visit South Korea before the maiden visit to The President of South Korea- Park Geun-hye.

iii. Shah Rukh Khan was also invited by the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on his first visit to India at the formal dinner with the prime minister.

Note: It is important to note that India and South Korea have signed a civil nuclear agreement already but it is still not operational. 

ii. In the year 2008, Shah Rukh Khan was given the title of Datuk, which is equivalent to the British Knighthood. This title was given to him by the Governor of Malaysia’s southern Malacca state, Mohamad Khalil Yaacob

7.    Mukesh Ambani remains richest Indian with assets of USD 18.9 billion

i. According to the China-based Hurun India Rich List, Ambani retained the top position for the second year even after a wealth decrease of 2 percent. Ambani is followed by London-based steel baron LN Mittal with assets of USD 15.9 billion.

ii. Mittal's wealth declined 6 percent from in 2012.

iii. Sun Pharmaceuticals' founder Dilip Shanghvi broke into the top three for the first time with a 66 percent surge in his wealth.

iv. "This rise in stock price was supported by the expected sales of the cancer drug Doxil, following Janssen Pharma Inc's admission of shortage of the drug supply," the report said.

8.    British Sculptor Sir Anthony Caro Passed Away at 89

i. British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro passed away on 23 October 2013. He was 89 years old. He died after a heart attack.

ii. He was the renowned British sculptor of his generation and also worked as the assistant to Henry Moore in the 1950s.

iii. He studied engineering at Christ's College Cambridge. Thereafter, she specialised in sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools in London until 1952.

iv. In May 2000, he was given the Order of Merit which recognises great achievement in the fields of the arts, learning, literature and science. On 9 March 2004, he was elected as the Senior Member of the Royal Academy.

DAILY GK UPDATE 24TH OCTOBER

1.    Today is UN day

i. Today is the United Nations' Day.

ii. The day is celebrated to commemorate the launch of the UN Charter in 1945.

iii. The theme of this year is-‘Partnerships for Global Progress’. In his message, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said this is the time to reflect on what more the UN can do to realise the vision for a better world. 

iv. UN relief agencies also play an important role in assisting over 34 million refugees and others fleeing war, famine and persecution. v. The world body also provides food to approximately 90 million people in 75 countries.

2.    Bihar nurse to share stage with Malala at UN function

i. A Bihar woman health official is set to share stage with Malala Yousufzai.

ii. Martha Dodray, in her mid-40s, is an auxiliary nursing midwife posted at Kusheshwarsthan primary health centre in the state's Darbhanga district. She was selected by the United Nations Foundation (UNF) for her extraordinary work to eradicate polio.

iii. She said she walked several kilometres each day to reach remote and inaccessible villages to administer polio vaccine to hundreds of children, mostly belonging to poorest of the poor. 

iv. "Marha was recently selected as one of the best polio workers in India for her devotion and hard work in polio vaccination drive. v. Her name was recommended for the award ceremony in New York," Darbhanga civil surgeon UK Choudhary said. 

vi. Bihar has not reported a single case of polio in the last three years and has virtually remained polio free since August 2010. 

3.    RBI forms panel to implement new bill payment system

i. The Reserve Bank of India has constituted a GIRO Advisory Group (GAG) to implement a national Indian Bill Payment System so that households will be able to use bank accounts to pay school fees, utilities, medical bills and make remittances electronically.

ii. The terms of reference of GAG, which is headed by Prof. Umesh Bellur, Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, include suggesting the nature of organisation to undertake the GIRO-based bill payments and framing guidelines for setting up and operating the GIRO-based bill payments.

iii. The group will also recommend the criteria (financial, governance, ownership, technical, operational, etc.) for the entity to seek authorisation for setting up bill payments system in the country under the Payment & Settlement System Act 2007.

iv. If GAG is of the opinion that a new organisation be created on the lines of entity like National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), then it will have to make recommendations, among others, on the nature of the organisation (whether Section 25 company or profit making entity, etc.); membership composition; capital structure & contributions by stakeholders.

4.    Austrade, YES Bank ink pact for knowledge sharing in food sector

i. The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) and YES Bank on Wednesday entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore avenues for mutually beneficial knowledge sharing in food processing and agricultural sectors.

ii. The tie-up marked the start of a relationship in which Australia can offer to India some insights on how to expand food exports to Japan and Europe, said Nicola Watkinson, Minister Commercial and Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner-South Asia, Austrade.

iii. According to the MoU, Austrade and YES Bank have agreed to jointly organise workshops across India to create awareness about Australian capabilities in the food and agri-business sectors.

iv. Austrade will assist Australian companies in their expansion in India through identification of joint venture partners and investment opportunities in India.

v. Australia’s food exports are estimated at $30 billion each year and nearly 60 per cent of its exports are accounted for by agricultural products.

5.    Former Indian Bank Chairman sent to imprisonment

i. A CBI court here yesterday sentenced former Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Bank M Gopalakrishnan and four others to one year imprisonment for defrauding various branches of the bank to the tune of about Rs 6.5 crore.

ii. CBI Principal Sessions Judge S Malathi also ordered Gopalakrishnan, N Ramakrishnan, bank valuer, V Ravikumar of Arul Builders, K Sai Jagannathan of Incom Builders, and Businessman Varadarajulu to pay a fine ranging from Rs 15,000 to 40,000.

iii. Apart from sanctioning the loan without sufficient collateral security, Gopalakrishnan waived the loan amount of 64 lakhs to Arul Builders, 50 lakhs to Incom Builders and Rs.6.72 lakhs to Incom builders.

6.    Google tops world’s best multinational workplaces list

i. Internet giant Google has emerged as the world’s best multinational company to work for, followed by software developer SAS Institute and network storage provider NetApp in the second and third place, respectively.

ii. Software giant Microsoft was ranked fourth by human resources consultancy ‘Great Place to Work Institute’, which has compiled a list of 25 such companies.

iii. “The 25 companies on the 2013 World’s Best Multinational Workplaces list set a high standard for us all. Their outstanding achievement builds a better society by creating great workplaces,” it said.

iv. The list also includes Autodesk ranked at the 11th place, followed by Monsanto (12th), BBVA (13th), American Express (14th), Hilti (15th), Telefonica (16th), Accor (17th), Quintiles (18th), SC Johnson (19th), FedEx Express (20th), Atento (21st), Mars (22nd), McDonald’s (23rd), The Coca-Cola Company (24th) and Novartis (25th).

v. Others in the top 10 include W.L Gore & Associates, which was ranked 5th on the list, followed by personal and household goods maker Kimberly-Clark (6th), hospitality giant Marriott (7th), consumer goods firm Diageo (8th), National Instruments (9th) and IT company Cisco (10th).

7.    Manna Dey, the legendary singer died at 94

i. Manna Dey, the legendary singer died on 23 October 2013 in Bangalore hospital. He was 94 years old.

ii. He was treated for respiratory illness died of cardiac arrest. He is survived by his daughters Shuroma and Sumita.

iii. He was born in the year 1919. His original name was Prabodh Chandra Dey but he was nicknamed Manna 
iv.  He sang many songs in different languages like Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Hindi, Assamese, Punjabi and Bhojpuri   

v. His popular tracks include Poocho Na Kaise Maine (Meri Surat Teri Aankhen), Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen (Waqt), Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli(Anand), Yeh Dosti (Sholay) and Ek Chatur Naar (Padosan) and Laga Chunari Mein Daag (Dil Hi Toh Hai) and'Yeh Raat Bheegi Bheegi' (Chori Chori). 

8.    Ranbir Kapoor new brand ambassador of Philips

i. Actor Ranbir Kapoor was Thursday named the brand ambassador for Philips, the country's leading lighting company.

ii. "Endorsing India's No 1 lighting brand Philips is a great opportunity and I am privileged to be associated with this power house of innovation. I am thrilled to be associated with Philips," Ranbir told reporters at the launch of new LED lighting solutions.

iii. In their new ad Philips revive the iconic song "Saara zamana haseeno ka Deewana", originally picturised on Amitabh Bachchan who sported an electric lightbulb suit in it. It now features Ranbir in a suit of LED lights.

iv. The "Barfi" star said: "I have tried to redo Amitjis 'Saara Zamaana song'. We have modernized the suit that was worn by him then. It was fun re-doing the song."

9.    SC awards Rs. 5.96 cr compensation in medical negligence case

i. The Supreme Court on Thursday awarded Rs 5.96 crore as compensation to be paid by Kolkata-based AMRI Hospital and three doctors to a US-based Indian-origin doctor for medical negligence which led to the death of his wife in 1998.

ii. A bench of justices S.J. Mukhopadhaya and V. Gopala Gowda asked the hospital and the three doctors to pay the amount within eight weeks to Kunal Saha, an Ohio-based AIDS researcher.

iii. The National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (NCDRC) in 2011 had awarded Rs. 1.73 crore to the doctor whose wife Anuradha Saha died in 1998 following faulty treatment administered at the hospital.

iv. The court said out of the total compensation amount, Dr. Balram Prasad and Dr. Sukumar Mukherjee will pay Rs. 10 lakh each and Dr. Baidyanath Halder will have to pay Rs. 5 lakh to Dr. Saha within eight weeks.

v. In 2009, though the apex court absolved the doctors and the hospitals of criminal liability for medical negligence, it had held them culpable of civil liabilities and referred Dr. Saha’s plea for compensation under provisions of the Consumer Protection Act to NCDRC, which, had in 2006 dismissed, the case.

10.  Sebi has disqualified Cals Refineries from issuing equity shares

i. Market regulator Sebi has disqualified Cals Refineries from issuing equity shares and any other security for a further eight years, as the company was found guilty in a case involving irregularities in issuance of Global Depository Receipts (GDRs).

ii. An interim prohibitory order was imposed on the company in 2011 and the company has already undergone restrictions for two years, while a final order was passed today imposing a ten-year ban on the company from issuance of any securities.The case is related to alleged market manipulation in trading of GDRs -- a financial instrument used to raise capital overseas -- of certain companies including Cals.

iii. However, Sebi noted that Cals had already undergone the prohibition imposed on it for a period of about two years following an interim order in 2011 by the market regulator in view of the GDR manipulation charges against the company.

iv. Sebi said the modus operandi adopted by Cals Refineries in conceiving the fraudulent arrangement of GDR issue to defraud investors and also facilitating the unjust enrichment of its promoter at the expense of investors has been fraught with mala fides at every stage of its execution.

11.  Carol Burnett Honoured With the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

i. The US comedian Carol Burnett was on 20 October 2013 honoured with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

ii. Three artists- Dame Julie Andrews, Tony Bennett and Tina Fey performed specifically in the honour of Carol Burnett at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts.
iii. The variety shows of Carol Burnett started in 1960s. These shows ran continuously for 11 years and fetched around 30 million viewers in a week.

iv. Carol Burnett received her first break for the Ed Sullivan Show. Thereafter, she also acted on Broadway and appeared on The Garry Moore Show.

About the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

i. The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is the foremost award for humour in America

ii. It was first awarded in the year 1988 by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. 

iii. The award is named after the essayist and humorist Mark Twain, who belonged to the 19th century and was a renowned novelist as well. Mark Twain made significant contribution to American humour. 

iv. Every year, the prize is presented in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in Washington DC. 
v. The recipients of the Twain Prize receive an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain sculpted by Karl Gerhardt.

12.  Tendulkar only Indian in Wisden all time World test XI

i. India's retiring batsman Sachin Tendulkar has been named in the Wisden all-time World Test XI.

ii. Tendulkar was named at number four spot in the team announced to mark 150 years of the Cricketers' Almanac in London.

iii. The team captained by legendary Australian batsman Don Bradman has four Englishmen, three West Indians, two Australians, one Indian and a Pakistani.

iv. Tendulkar's contemporaries like Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting and Jaques Kallis could not make it to the team, nor other Indian greats like Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev.

v. i. The Sports Ministry and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) have launched 'India Sports 2014' at the 5th Global Sports Summit to promote sports among youth in the country.

ii. The event will be an umbrella programme, focusing on all aspects of sports and will bring the entire sports fraternity on one platform.

iii. The first edition will not only serve as a platform for the Indian sports industry to showcase their strength but will also act as a catalyst in promoting sports amongst the youth.

iv. The event will include an international exhibition on sports sector at the National Stadium, an international conference on sports sector, reverse buyer-seller meet by sports goods export promotion council, networking dinner and concurrent sports activities and tournaments.
