Computer Hardware Basics
- Central Processing Unit (CPU)
- Memory
- Input and Output Devices
- Storage
In addition to the above mentioned components, there are many other
inner components which make the basic components work together in an
efficient way. Examples of those inner components are Mother board, several electronic boards (cards) and slots, bus, a maze of wires and cables etc. Apart
from these devices communication and network devices allow the computer
to communicate with other devices. Common common communication devices
are modems and Ethernet cards.
How these hardware components coordinate with each other to make computer work ?
The computer cannot collect the data on its own. As the users of
computer, its our responsibility to supply the data to the computer
through an Input Device (keyboard, mouse, voice recorder etc). The Input Device receives the data in the form of instructions from users. This received data is either processed by CPU (you can also call it as a processor) or stored in memory for
further reference. The instructions stored in memory determines the
processing operations. The results of processed operations are either
stored in the memory / storage devices or sent to connected Output Devices.
The data transfers are determined by software instructions which
identify the devices involved. The control unit, a part of CPU, controls
and coordinates all these activities. You can check the images of these
hardware parts below. We shall discuss the functionalities of these
components in detail in our next post. Happy Reading :)
