International Affairs
  • US President Barack Obama will hold bilateral meetings with the leaders of France and China on the sidelines of a G20 meeting in Russia.
  • Facing obstacles at home and abroad, President Barack Obama this week plans to urge reluctant world leaders to back an American-led strike against Syria even though the prospects for military action could depend on a fractured U.S. Congress.
  • A survey carried out by the Pew Research Center over the weekend on Americans found that 48 percent of Americans oppose "conducting military airstrikes" against Syria over its alleged use of chemical weapons compared to 29 percent who support such action.
  • Bhutanese Prime Minister Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay invited Indian industrialists to invest in Bhutan and explore the country's potential.
  • The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for a credible and peaceful Presidential election in Maldives, scheduled for Saturday.

National Affairs
  • Delhi Metro has introduced two additional trains on the Central Secretariat-Badarpur route from today. With this, the total number of trains on this line has increased to 22.
  • Bihar CM NitishKumar inaugurates 2 important road overbridges located at Gaya and Dehri-On-Sone through videoconferencing.
  • India and Japan agreed to sign a bilateral agreement in order to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the tourism sector.
  • The government approved a Rs 351 crore project to increase awareness among children, industrialists and farmers towards water conservation and improve the demand side management of available water resources.
  • The West Bengal government today offered 278.5 acres of land to 10 companies both in the private and public sector that has the potential to attract an investment of Rs 1000 crore in the state.
  • Renowned Urdu authors, poets and scholars from across the world will participate in a three-day conference organised by National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL), which aims to form an action plan to promote the language, beginning in delhi from tomorrow.
  • The government has approved the establishment of an independent society for “transforming livelihoods and lives of rural households, with an emphasis on women” in tribal areas.
  • The Gujarat government today rejected the resignation submitted by IPS officer DG Vanzara, who is under custody for the last seven years for involvement in alleged fake encounter cases.
  • The inter-ministerial panel on linkages will meet next week to deliberate on coal supplies to the power sector, amid the power producers facing fuel supply issues.


Business and Economy
  • Raghuram Rajan on Wednesday took over as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He announces that the country's economy was "fundamentally sound" and had a "bright future" in his first remarks after taking the helm at the central bank earlier in the day.
  •  Environment Ministry has asked Adani group to create a green restoration fund of Rs 200 crore for repairing environmental damage to Mundra in Gujarat where its port and SEZ projects are coming up.
  • According to the Reserve Bank of India's report,  India's external debt profile has deteriorated over a period of time with significant rise in volatile capital or hot money and decline in import cover.
  • The Reserve Bank of India says it's move to partially relax some of the restrictions imposed on capital outflows aims at attracting slightly longer term capital flows.

Schemes
  • DirectBenefit Transfer scheme for LPG (DBTL) to be launched in Chandigarh on October 1.
  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the launch of the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) to be implemented in mission mode during 2013-2022.
  • The CCEA approves the restructuring of the centrally-sponsored scheme of Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY) in the 12th Plan.
  • The CCEA also approves the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) with an allocation of about Rs 6,405 crore.

Awards and Honors
  • Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will receive a prize in memory of assassinated Swedish prime minister Anna Lindh for her role as a “unique female leader.”
  • Jharkhand bags Skoch Group award as an emerging state for improved  governance through leveraging communication & information technologies.
