Why don’t we feel the Earth’s rotation?

The earth rotates around its axis and everything that is on its surface rotates along with it. Moreover, the atmosphere around you has the same movement and we also spin with it. So why can’t we feel anything ?

First of all, in order for us to perceive any movement, we need a point of reference that is fixed and/or external to the moving body, which makes it possible to see the changes of position in space. For example, when in a moving car, we can clearly see the movement through the windows, which makes us feel like we are moving. However, when flying in an airplane, if we close the windows so we can’t see the clouds moving outside, we do not feel like we are moving at all.

The same thing happens to us, traveling at 465 meters per second (or a little less if you’re located closer to one of the poles) on the Earth’s surface; without looking at any reference points, we can’t notice, and therefore feel, any movement. In order to perceive the movement of the Earth, you have to glance at sun or the stars, for example.

Observing from the Earth, however, the sun is the one that seems to move, clearly seen during the sunrise and sunset. When watching a time-lapse of the night sky, the stars are also the ones that seem to move compared to us. In fact, they are the fixed reference points; it is the Earth’s rotation which gives us the impression that they move. So, from down here, it’s like the sun and the stars were the ones moving and we are the ones who stay still, when in reality it’s the exact opposite.
