INTERNATIONAL EVENTS
  • UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon discusses ways to expedite investigation process in Syria chemical attack.
  • Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Today visited the LoC to assess the security situation in the wake of violations of a ceasefire in the region over the past few weeks.
  • Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani school girl shot in the head in a failed assassination attempt by the Taliban, today inaugurated Europe's biggest public library in her newly adopted home of Birmingham.

NATIONAL EVENTS
  • For the first time in the country, a high-tech voter recording system (VVPAT) will be used along with EVMs during the bye-election to Noksen assembly constituency in Nagaland tomorrow.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the 11th Asian Pacific Postal Union (APPU) Congress today at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.
  • Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was today elected president of ruling Shiromani Akali Dal here for the second time in a row.

BUSINESS
  • Software giant Microsoft today said it will acquire Finnish handset maker Nokia's handset business for 5.44 billion euros (USD 7.17 billion) in cash, in an effort to strengthen its position in the smartphone market.
  • Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) today launched its new compact car 'Grand i10' priced between Rs 4.29 lakh and Rs 6.41 lakh as it looks to enhance its position in the country.


ECONOMY
  • Internationally renowned economist Raghuram Rajan will take over as RBI Governor tomorrow and plunge straight into a fire-fight situation as the country battles a rapid fall in rupee, high inflation, low growth and burgeoning current account deficit (CAD).
  • The Indian rupee dropped sharply below 68 against the US dollar on persistent demand from banks and importers on the back of a firm American currency overseas amidst sudden fall in equity markets.
  • Farmers, who have innovated agri-technologies, should register with state-run research body ICAR so as to promote widespread use of such technologies across the country and improve production.

SPORTS
  • Master batsman Sachin Tendulkar has been selected for a special ‘Century of Centuries Award’ by the Sports Journalists’ Association of Mumbai (SJAM).
  • Divij Sharan`s US Open came to an end after the Indian and his Chinese Taipei partner Yen-Hsun Lu went down fighting to Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer in the men`s doubles third round.
